Frederick W. (Rick) Barrigar - 01/12/2012
Frederick W. (Rick) Barrigar
Rick, 68, died peacefully on 11 January, from cancer. He is survived by his brother Bob and Bob’s wife Evelyn; several nieces, nephews and cousins; and countless friends. His family are grateful to his friends for their dedicated support during his illness, and to the May Court nurses and staff for their attentive hospice care.

Rick was an avid sportsman, enjoying basketball, golf, and fishing. But his greatest love was hockey – until a few months before his death, he was typically on the ice twice every week.

Rick served as President of the Kiwanis Club of Ottawa in 2002-3, and was elected Lieutenant-Governor of Kiwanis for Eastern Canada and the Caribbean for 2004-5. Kiwanis International awarded him the Glen Bagnell Growth Award and a Mel Osborne Fellowship. Late last year, Kiwanis Ottawa established the Rick Barrigar Scholarship in his honour. For Kiwanis and privately, Rick devoted time and effort to charitable causes, including years of service to the Boys & Girls Club of Ottawa.

Rick served in a number of sales-oriented positions, especially in the computer industry, during his working life. His most recent employer Coughlin & Associates Ltd. was especially supportive during his terminal illness.

Friends are invited to visit at the Central Chapel of Hulse, Playfair and McGarry, 315 McLeod Street (at O’Connor), on Saturday, May 12th from 2:30pm until the Celebration of Rick’s Life Service at 3:30pm. Reception to follow. Rick did not request donations in his memory, but the Hospice at May Court, the Boys & Girls Club of Ottawa and the Kiwanis Club of Ottawa would be worthy recipients.

Betty Isobel Ellis (nee Anderson) - 01/19/2012
Betty Isobel Ellis (nee Anderson)
August 6, 1923-January 16, 2012

Died peacefully at home in Ottawa, surrounded by loved ones. Defying conventional wisdom to the end, she lived out her last years in her own home, on her own terms.

Betty grew up in Toronto, with sister Ada and brother Jimmy. She attended Bishop Strachan School and the University of Toronto.

Some of her fondest memories were of long summers at her family’s cottage on Lake Simcoe. In 1947 she married John Jarvis Ellis (deceased) and moved to Ottawa.

She is already deeply missed by children Dorian, Mark (Suzanne), Jody (Cathy), Sara (Pat), and designated daughter Valerie Irvine. Betty was a proud Grammy to grandchildren Devon (Bobbak), Jordan (Madiha), Christina (Pierre), Caitlin, Grant, and Michael. Her latest joy was her great-grandson Cameron, aka Bunnyman.

Betty had a great wit and a sly sense of humour, and enjoyed words and words games. She was an inveterate traveller and fabulous cook, who instilled the enjoyment of great food and high adventure in others. A nature lover, Betty was an avid gardener and bird watcher. She also loved beautiful objects, collecting artwork and antiques, with a special focus on Canadiana.

The family gives thanks and love to the wonderful team who worked so hard to keep Betty comfortably at home until the end ? Mummy’s little “darling” Carol Baui, companion Helen Scott, and Marvelous Max & the good doctors of the Palliative Care Outreach Program overseen by angel Doctor Margaret Farncombe. Invaluable to Team Betty were James Rath, Jennifer, and the wonderful women of St. Elizabeth Health Care notably the two “Miss Poisons” Marie and Jessica, Margaret, Susie, Jimao, and Louise, as well as nurses Ashley and Kaila, et al. Bless you all. Thanks also to Achille Konga and his team at the Rideau Pharmacy who diligently managed Betty’s medications for the better part of a decade.

A Memorial Service will be held at the Central Chapel of Hulse, Playfair & McGarry, 315 McLeod Street (at O’Connor) on Saturday January 21 at 4pm, followed by a reception in the McGarry Family Reception Center. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in Betty’s memory to Palliative Care Outreach Program, 1716 Woodward Dr., Ste 111, Ottawa, ON K2C 0P8.

James Jeremiah Ovens - 01/25/2012
James Jeremiah Ovens
1945-2012

We are very sad to announce the passing of our dear Jim after a short and courageous battle with cancer on January 25, 2012, age 66 years. Beloved son of John "Jerry" (predeceased) and Isabel. Cherished husband of Julianna , devoted and loving father of Julian (Jacqueline) and Paul. Proud grandfather of Gabrielle. Much loved brother of Patrick (Joanne), John, Gloria, and Suzzi and devoted uncle to Kathleen (Aaron), David (Kristina), Jackie (Daniel), Sean, Daniel (predeceased) and Robin (predeceased). Also mourned by his uncle Wesley (Beatrice) and sister-in-law Raquel, predeceased by her husband Michael.

A son of Northern Ontario, Jim was born in Copper Cliff where his grandparents settled in the nineteenth century. He was a passionate Canadian, well-versed in Canadian history, politics and literature. Jim was a proponent for a strong, progressive and ethical future for Canada, inspired by such diverse, great Canadians as Jean Vanier and Wilfred Laurier.

Jim will be proudly remembered and always loved by family and friends as a man with a deep Catholic faith. His volunteer and charity work, whether on the Board of Catholic Family Services or helping parishioners and others through his dedication to the Blessed Sacrament parish was an inspiration to family and friends. Through the Church's Social Action Committee, Jim worked tirelessly to assist refugees, immigrants, and the needy of Ottawa. Although he worked in politics for many years, perhaps his greatest accomplishment was the range of people he successfully influenced with his integrity and his profound Canadian liberal values of fairness and social justice.

A special thank you to the many healthcare providers, especially in Oncology at the General campus of the Ottawa hospital, for their support through this difficult time.
